One of the best things about holding an event in the UK is that it’s not too far to go on a recce, so when you need to do two, there aren’t many complaints (except perhaps from those members of the team who don’t get to go…).
Scotland is the prime example of an incredible wilderness almost on our doorstep – voted the most beautiful country on the planet last year it has majestic scenery, an incredible culture and is (according to a man I met half way up a Munro yesterday) ‘simply heaven on Earth’. I think most would agree.
Our first recce last year was to find the perfect spot that is remote, yet accessible and beautiful, yet challenging. The amazing Luss Estate, owned by the Colquhoun family, offers just that. A 50 acre wilderness shaped like a pear drop on the west side of Loch Lomond, it is only 40 minutes from Glasgow. They have been wonderfully helpful and have given us free rein to go wherever we wish. Despite this, finding the perfect camp spot is not easy; it must have the right grass, not be at risk of flooding, be accessible… the list goes on! Fortunately, we’ve found a location nestled in a glen near a remote farmhouse and bothy that meets all our needs. It’s then just a matter of testing the route, a beautiful canoe across Loch Lomond before following the West Highland Way to hike up Ben Lomond, before returning back to camp. As with our other events, IGO will provide the tents, canoes and all safety equipment; you simply need to turn up ready to go! We have an incredible local team who are helping us with all aspects of the planning – it’s fantastic working with kindred adventure spirits who share our enthusiasm for the event and will be on hand to ensure everyone makes it around the course safely.
They’re also integral to making life in camp an important part of this trip. We’ll have survival skills workshops, yoga classes, whisky tasting, a venison barbecue and a local Scottish band to kick off the celebrations on Saturday night. It will make for a truly memorable weekend and we are very much looking forward to heading up there in May and turning the plans into reality!
