I’m sure you’ve all seen a million and one inspirational quotes on social media encouraging you to do something different and step out of your comfort zone. But the truth is, breaking your routine is often a lot easier said than done.
There’s a load of science behind why we find it so hard to take that leap out of our comfort zones. But there’s also a lot of science behind why it’s such a great thing to do every so often. With a little understanding and a small adjustment or two, you can escape the norm and do amazing things. But first…
What exactly is a ‘comfort zone’?
It’s often described as a behavioural frame of mind whereby your actions and behaviours fit into a routine or pattern that keep stress and risk to an absolute minimum. Think of it as a state of security that enables you to reduce your stress and anxiety levels and stay balanced and happy.
It’s not necessarily a good or bad thing, it’s simply a state that we all naturally gravitate towards. Our comfort zones provide us with head space and a sense of calm. Having said that, it’s also a good idea to leave it every now and again. Here are my top 5 reasons why…
1. Personal Growth
One of our fundamental needs as a human being is the need for growth. When you begin to challenge yourself, you’ll create a self perpetuating rhythm as those small gains stack together to create the force behind your personal growth. By stretching and pushing those boundaries you’ll naturally step outside your comfort zone as you grow.
2. Overcome the fear
We all know that our minds are hugely powerful, but that means they can work with or against us. It’s important to remember that YOU have complete control over your mind so never let your fear of failing stop you from doing something. By saying ‘yes’ to your next challenge you’ll be widening your comfort zone and pushing the boundaries of what you thought was possible.
3. Self fulfillment
Have you ever woken up with that feeling that you’re not living your life to your full potential? You’re not alone, it’s a feeling a lot of us come across. But adventure, exploration and trying something new can be a great way to make you feel more fulfilled and satisfied with your life. It’s also a great way to give yourself a sense of perspective that you might not have otherwise got.
4. Increase your productivity
I find that following a training plan and completing a challenge gives me an amazing sense of focus and belief that I can make it happen. Those increased feelings of determination and confidence will leave you more productive in your work and personal life.
5. A positive impact on others
Two brilliant things happen when we challenge ourselves to do something different. The first is that you become like a magnet, drawing people into your life that will help you speed up your journey towards achieving whatever challenge you’ve set yourself. The second is that you’ll in turn help others grow too. Whether that’s intentionally or unintentionally, you might well find that you inspire others along the way!
I hope I’ve gone some way to inspiring you to set yourself a goal or challenge that will take you outside your comfort zone. There’s so much to gain from trusting and believing in your ability to do something you haven’t done before. So go on, give it ago, it’s where the magic happens!
