Rory Lawson, former international rugby player speaks about how he maintains peak performance with correct fuel and hydration and how CocoPro was born to fill a vital gap in the market.

To be at my best I knew I needed to get the fundamentals right – physical preparation and mental preparation. Getting myself physically right involved nailing training, rest and recovery in the build-up to any big game. Sleep is a big factor, but I always felt nutrition played the biggest part in any performance. Nerves meant I wasn’t a great eater on game day so I would eat a high protein/carb meal early, then fuel the fire with fluids including protein and coconut water in the build-up to kick-off to ensure I was physically ready for action. It was the same with recovery when I got that bit right (in amongst a fair few celebratory beers after a game) – I would really feel the difference.

Hydration is key to ensure fluids lost during exercise are replenished – when we sweat our mineral levels dip, which if not properly restored can lead to unfavourable side effects such as muscle cramping, dizziness or feeling weak.

What is optimal nutrition? This really depends on the individual – there is no one size fits all. How active you are, how many calories you burn per day, how much you weigh and a number of other personal health factors will dictate what is the best nutritional plan for you. Whilst there are a number of publications claiming to share how much protein a person ‘should’ be consuming daily, this again cannot and should not be generalised.

Hydration is key to ensure fluids lost during exercise are replenished – when we sweat our mineral levels dip, which if not properly restored can lead to unfavourable side effects such as muscle cramping, dizziness or feeling weak. With regard to protein, as a general rule, anywhere between 1.5-2g of protein per kilogram of body weight for an average person is a good guide, but this should not be taken as a strict figure as will alter depending upon the factors mentioned above. if you are looking for convenience or consumption on the go after exercise, then protein infused drinks can offer a good solution. However, it’s important to be mindful of the often lengthy ingredient lists that come with a number of supposed ‘health’ shakes… so many on the market are laden with sugar or filled with unnecessary additives.

Founded by former international rugby player, Rory Lawson*, CocoPro was born to fill a vital gap in the market. Blending functional ingredients without adding sugar or a list of unrecognisable additives, coupled with Rory’s first-hand knowledge as to the importance of nutrition when it came to performance, mindset and recovery, resulted in CocoPro’s range of healthy, delicious, high protein drinks – that all come in under 100 calories per serve. Coconut water is naturally rich in essential minerals, that help to regulate overall brain, heart, muscle and nervous system function. Whey protein isolate is the fastest absorbing source of protein, making CocoPro ideal to aid muscle repair.
