The Exmoor National Park recently bore witness to a totally unique event. 20 intrepid adventurers, including Rugby World Cup winner, Will Greenwood, made the early train from Paddington and travelled to the stunningly wild North Devon coast for a taster of the Talisker Whisky Coastal Challenge by IGO Adventures.
IGO and Talisker teams into a camp positioned in one of the most stunning locations in North Devon. The view stretched out for miles down the coastline with the Valley of Rocks making itself apparent.
Following the first briefing, we realised the company we shared – a crack shot team of experts in their fields, including winners of SAS: Who Dares Wins, notable chefs and Rugby World Cup winners.
In the early afternoon, after a good warm-up session carried out by our friends at Be Military Fit, the participants ran 6km along the cliffs to Lee Abbey Bay for the beginning of the swim stage. The group transformed from running shorts to wetsuits, donned orange swim hats, went through the swim briefing session with the local RNLI safety team and entered the deep blue for a wild coastal 1km swim. The group came out refreshed and buzzing ready for the 5km return run up the cliffs and back into camp.
The Towil brothers from Basic Kitchen cooked up some delicious mackerel tacos with quinoa and butternut squash out of their red 1960s French fire truck Pompier, which was swiftly devoured by the triumphant coastal challengers. Next on the afternoon’s menu was a bushcraft workshop on fire making followed by some Talisker Whisky tasting around the fire.
The late afternoon slipped into the evening with wild spirits sharing tales and stories. The IGO Feast treated the group to a 16 hour smoked brisket and local scallops cooked over the campfire. After some delicious hot chocolate infused with Talisker Whisky, a guitar was passed around the campfire with everyone testing out their vocal skills. After a beautiful sunset, the group slowly headed off to bed.
Morning broke over the cliffs as a cloudless sky reminded guests of the beauty of camping. There was a great buzz around the food fire truck as bacon sandwiches and porridge were gorged on before a morning mindful yoga session run by IGO’s very own Holly followed by a Be Military Fit session. With the fitness and stretching done for the day, all the group embarked on a foraging expedition down the Heddon Valley picking up everything from Primrose and Gorse flower, Wood Sorrel, young Beech leaves, blossoms and Wood Avens leaves. These foraged goods from nature’s larder were then used back at camp in an infusion with Talisker Whisky to make a hot toddy.
After another spectacular meal from The Towil bros, everyone checked out of the canvas hotel and headed back to the train station enriched with a wild experience and new friends made.
